What is Concrete Pumping?
Concrete pumping is the process of using a hydraulic pump to push liquid concrete through a system of hoses or pipes from a concrete truck to a pour point that cannot be reached by the truck's own chute. The pump generates the pressure required to move concrete — a dense, heavy material — over distances and around obstacles that gravity and direct delivery cannot manage.
In practical terms, a concrete pump allows liquid concrete to be delivered through a narrow side gate to a rear-yard extension slab, down a steep driveway to a pool shell, up over a retaining wall to a hillside pad, or across a commercial floor area dozens of metres from where the truck can legally position. Anywhere the truck can't reach, the pump can — and that covers a surprisingly large proportion of residential construction sites in Adelaide.
How Does a Concrete Pump Work?
A line pump (the type used for most residential and light commercial Adelaide work) consists of a truck-mounted hydraulic pumping unit connected to a series of flexible rubber hose sections. The pumping unit draws concrete from the truck's chute into its hopper, then two hydraulic pistons alternately push and pull, creating a continuous pressure that forces concrete through the hose at a controlled rate.
The hose sections are coupled end to end to form a run from the pump to the discharge point. The discharge end is held by the pump operator or an assistant who positions it over the pour area. As the slab fills, the hose end is moved progressively across the pour surface.

Do You Need a Concrete Pump?
Not every concrete job in Adelaide requires a pump — but a larger proportion do than most homeowners initially expect. The key question is whether a concrete truck's chute can physically reach the pour point in the required position.
A concrete truck chute extends approximately 3–4 metres from the truck's rear. If your pour point is within that range and the truck can position adjacent to the pour, direct chute delivery may work. If any of the following apply, a pump is likely necessary:
- The pour point is more than 3–4 metres from where the truck can safely position
- The rear yard is accessible only via a side gate narrower than approximately 2.4–3 metres
- The block is sloped such that the truck cannot drive to the pour level
- The pour is below ground (basement, pool shell, underground slab)
- Mature trees, fences, or structures prevent the truck from reaching the pour point
- The pour is on a high-density residential or commercial site where the truck cannot access the interior

Concrete Mix for Pumping
Not every concrete mix can be pumped. A pumpable mix requires sufficient fine material (cement and sand) to lubricate the hose, adequate workability (slump) to flow under pressure, and aggregate sized appropriately for the hose diameter in use. When ordering concrete for a pump pour, always specify to the batching plant that it is for pump delivery and provide the hose diameter — they will supply an appropriate pump mix.
Never add extra water on site to make concrete easier to pump. Excessive water reduces strength and durability. If the mix arrives too stiff, contact the batching plant for guidance rather than watering it down.
What Happens on Pour Day
A typical residential pump pour in Adelaide proceeds as follows:
- Pump truck arrives — typically 30–45 minutes before the first concrete truck
- Site assessment and positioning — truck positioned, outriggers deployed if applicable
- Hose assembly — hose sections coupled from pump to pour point

- First concrete truck arrives — concrete loaded into pump hopper immediately after priming
