Two Types of Concrete Pump
When people ask about concrete pumping, they're usually thinking of one of two very different types of equipment: a line pump (sometimes called a trailer pump or ground pump) or a boom pump. Both push concrete from the truck to the pour point under hydraulic pressure, but they do it in fundamentally different ways — and they're suited to very different types of projects.
Understanding the difference helps you ask the right questions and choose the right operator for your job.
What is a Line Pump?
A line pump is a truck-mounted or trailer-mounted concrete pump that uses flexible rubber hoses to carry concrete from the pump to the pour point. The hose is laid on the ground — along driveways, through gates, over fences, around obstacles — and positioned at the discharge point by the pump operator or an assistant. The pump pushes concrete through the hose under pressure, and the operator moves the hose end as the pour progresses across the slab area.

What is a Boom Pump?
A boom pump is a larger truck-mounted pump equipped with a hydraulically articulated steel arm — the "boom" — that extends and positions over the pour area. Instead of hose laid on the ground, the concrete travels through steel pipes mounted on the boom arm and exits at the tip of the arm directly over the pour point. The boom can be extended and folded to reach over obstacles or across wide slab areas without repositioning the truck.
Key characteristics of a boom pump:
- Articulated steel boom arm — reaches over and around obstacles
- Large truck footprint — requires significant road space to set up and outrigger
- Output rate: typically 60–160m³ per hour — significantly faster than a line pump

Boom pumps are the equipment of choice for large commercial construction — warehouse floor slabs, commercial car parks, high-rise concrete frames, and any situation where volume and speed are the primary requirements. Their large truck footprint and high minimum hire cost make them impractical and uneconomical for standard residential work.

Which Do You Need for Your Adelaide Project?
Residential Projects — Line Pump
For the overwhelming majority of residential concrete projects in Adelaide, a line pump is the right choice. This includes:
- House slabs and extensions — any residential foundation or extension slab
- Pool shell pours — continuous pool shell concrete on residential blocks
- Driveway and footpath pours — residential driveway replacements
- Difficult access sites — narrow lots, sloped blocks, rear yards, Hills properties
- Slab pumping — all residential slab types including waffle-pod and raft
A boom pump would be wasteful and impractical for most of these jobs — the minimum hire cost is significantly higher, the truck cannot navigate suburban streets and driveways as easily, and the volume of a standard residential pour doesn't justify the output rate of a boom pump.
Large Commercial Projects — Boom Pump May Apply
For large commercial floor slabs (500m² or more), multi-storey concrete frames, and high-volume industrial pours where time is money and every additional hour of pour time has significant cost implications, a boom pump may be the better choice. The higher hire rate is offset by the significantly faster output — a boom pump can complete in two hours what a line pump might take five hours to place.
For mid-size commercial pumping in Adelaide (warehouse slabs under 500m², commercial fitouts, retail floor slabs), a line pump is typically still the right call — the speed advantage of a boom pump doesn't outweigh the cost difference at these volumes.
