Why Pool Shells Require a Concrete Pump
A swimming pool shell pour is one of the more demanding residential concrete operations — and one where the pump is not optional, it's essential. Pool shells are poured in a single continuous operation, typically using a specialised concrete mix (often a gunite or a pumpable high-cement-content mix), into a shaped excavation that is difficult or impossible to reach with a direct truck discharge.
The excavation is usually in a residential rear yard. In Adelaide, that almost always means no truck access — the only delivery option is a pump from the street or driveway, with hose run through the side passage. The pump must deliver at a consistent rate that allows the pool construction crew to place and pack the concrete into the shell form layer by layer without cold joints or gaps.
What a Pool Shell Pump Job Involves
Access. The pump truck positions on the street or driveway. Hose is run through the side gate, often 15–30 metres to the pool excavation. For pools further into a large block, hose runs can extend to 50 metres or more.
Mix coordination. Pool shell concrete is typically a 32MPa or 40MPa mix with specific workability characteristics — it must be pumpable but also cohesive enough to be placed against the steel reinforcement without slumping off curved walls. We liaise with your concrete supplier and pool builder to confirm the right specification.
Continuous pour. Pool shells are poured without stopping. Cold joints (where fresh concrete is placed against partially-set concrete) are a major structural defect in pool construction. Our operator maintains consistent pump output throughout the pour, and we coordinate truck sequencing with your supplier so there is no gap between loads.
Timing. Pool pours are time-sensitive, particularly in Adelaide's summer heat. The mix begins to stiffen faster at high temperatures, shortening the working window. We schedule the pump to arrive early and have the line primed before the first concrete truck pulls up.
Adelaide regularly records temperatures above 38°C in summer. Pool concrete poured on a hot day with a slow delivery method can develop cold joints as early concrete stiffens before the pour is complete. A pump eliminates this risk by enabling fast, continuous placement of the full shell in a single controlled operation. For pours scheduled in January and February, we recommend early morning starts to avoid peak heat.
