Slab pumping is one of the most common applications for a concrete pump in Adelaide. Whether you're pouring a new house slab, a granny flat foundation, a commercial floor, or an extension onto an existing structure, a pump delivers fresh concrete progressively across the slab form — at exactly the pace your concreters need to place, compact, and screed.
The alternative — direct chute or wheelbarrow — deposits large volumes of concrete in one spot, creating excess labour moving material and increasing the risk of uneven compaction. Pumping delivers the concrete where it's needed, when it's needed, with a consistent flow rate that experienced concreters can work with efficiently.
Types of Slabs We Pump
- Raft slabs — the most common slab type for new Adelaide homes. A raft slab is a reinforced concrete slab designed as a single structural unit, typically 100–150mm thick with thickened edge beams. Pumping fills the beams first, then progressively covers the slab area.
- Waffle-pod slabs — a suspended-looking slab system using plastic pods to create a grid of concrete ribs. The pods must not be disturbed during the pour, so controlled pump delivery is essential — far preferable to dropping large concrete loads from a chute.
- Conventional slabs on ground — simple, flat-formed slabs for garages, sheds, and hardstand areas. Often straightforward pours where a pump allows efficient coverage of larger areas.

- Footings and strip footings — narrow trench footings for retaining walls, fences, and building perimeters benefit from pumped delivery that fills the form without spillage or over-pouring.
Waffle-pod slab systems use polystyrene void formers placed on the ground before pouring. Dropping concrete from a direct-discharge chute can dislodge or depress pods, compromising the slab structure. A pump with a controlled flow rate, directed by a concreter with the hose, fills the rib grid systematically and accurately — protecting the pod layout and delivering a structurally sound slab.
What Affects Slab Pour Quality
The pump is one part of a quality slab pour — but it's an important part. Factors we contribute to:

Correct positioning throughout the pour. On larger slabs, the hose is repositioned progressively across the form so no area receives concrete from an excessive height or angle that could cause segregation.
Clean start to the pour. Proper line priming means the first concrete entering the slab is not contaminated with water or grout washout. This matters most for slabs that will have a finished topping or exposed concrete surface.
